Behavioral Health
RHG has behaviorists (psychologists and/or licensed clinical social workers) who work as part of the primary care team.
Program Description:
Rural Health Group's Integrated Primary Care (IPC) combines medical and behavioral health services to more fully address the spectrum of problems that patients bring to primary medical care. Because the vast majority of patients in primary care have either a physical ailment that is affected by stress, problems maintaining healthy lifestyles or a psychological disorder, it is clinically effective and cost effective to make behavioral health providers part of primary medical care. IPC allows patients to feel that for any problem they bring, they have come to the right place. By teaming mental health and medical providers, IPC is the structural realization of the biopsychosocial model advocated so broadly in Family Medicine and Psychiatry. It is the reunification in practice of the mind and the body, for so long addressed in the separate worlds of medical and mental health treatment. As evidence grows about the complex interrelationships between mind and body, it is clear that the artificial divisions that have fragmented healthcare delivery are no longer relevant. In order to provide high-quality care, we must create strong partnerships that allow for collaborative practice.

Dental
RHG offers preventive and basic restorative dental services individually tailored to meet the needs of our patients. The services are offered in state of the art dental facilities located in Henderson, Jackson and Roanoke Rapids. RHG also offers oral health education and screening programs. The basic dental services include exams, cleanings, children’s fluoride, x-rays, sealants, fillings, extractions and other routine dental care. We offer some advanced services including root canals, crowns, bridges, and dentures.
Our dental services are available to children and adults.
It is important and beneficial to see your dentist and hygienist regularly. To obtain good oral health, your teeth should be cleaned every six months. At your regular check-up, your dentist will perform an exam. Having regular exams will catch any decay early and allow for a healthy smile. Your dentist will not only examine your teeth for any signs of decay, but will perform a complete oral exam which includes a check for any abnormalities and an Oral Cancer Screening. Men and women over age 40 are at a higher risk for oral cancer as well as those who smoke and consume alcohol. Your regular check-ups are key in catching oral cancer early and keeping your entire mouth clean and healthy.
Children should begin seeing the dentist as early as age one. Getting your child familiar with your dentist early will promote a healthy start for your child as well as create a positive experience that will make future visits happy ones. At your child’s appointment, your dentist may discuss placing sealants on your child’s teeth. Sealants are applied to permanent molars and pre-molars on children ages 6-12 years of age. The sealants act as a barrier on teeth with deep grooves. It is an easy way to prevent decay on back teeth for your little one(s). Please ask your dentist about sealants at your child’s regular check-up.
We love to educate on the importance of brushing and flossing. Brushing in the morning and at night is critical in keeping your smile healthy. We also recommend brushing after meals. It is imperative to floss every night since brushing your teeth only cleans about 60% of the surface of your teeth. You need to floss in order to clean in between your teeth and remove food and build-up accumulated during the day. If you need a demonstration on how to brush or floss properly, please ask your dentist or hygienist.

Community-based Outreach Programs
Breast & Cervical Cancer: The Breast & Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) offers “no cost” breast cancer screenings, mammograms, and cervical screenings to uninsured/underinsured women ages 50-64 who have incomes at or below 250% of the federal poverty level. In addition, eligible women under the age of 50 who are symptomatic may receive services. Women having an abnormal breast or cervical screening result are referred for case management and additional evaluation. The program is designed as a screening program and does not provide funds for treatment; however, it is the single portal of entry to the Breast and Cervical Cancer Medicaid in North Carolina. Rural Health Group annually provides “no cost” breast and cervical screening services to over 120 eligible women.
Ryan White: The primary goal of the Ryan White program is to provide primary medical and dental care services to uninsured and underinsured persons living with HIV/AIDS. Peer education including “prevention for positives” and case management, such as financial assistance for housing or food are supported through our program. Contact our Infectious Diseases department located in the Rural Health Group at Henderson building at 252-438-3549.
WIC: The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program serves low income pregnant, breastfeeding, and post partum women; infants; and children up to age 5 who have a nutrition related health problem. Participants receive nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and supplemental foods to improve their diets. The WIC project employs a Nutritionist to administer the program and is currently serving over 2,300 women, infants, and children in Halifax County.
